Dream Catching

From the moment I brought in this Dream Catcher kit from Kaisercraft, I knew it was something I HAD to create and play with.  I started to work on it one other time but it just didn't come to me.  Last night was THE night.  This beauty was born and oh does it make me happy.

It was one of those days were I found myself frustrated with the mundane.  Work, cooking, cleaning, laundry....blah, blah, blah.  I went into my craft room trying to work on my design for the Zonta Cardmaking Extravaganza but totally got side tracked.   Procrastination?  Maybe.  Just what I needed?  Absolutely!  I find working with paper and pretty things to lighten my mood and set my mind at ease.  Picture this......Here I am.....enter craft room.  Take a deep breath in.  Get fingers all inky.  Breath out.  Feel good....AND proud!

Dream Catcher Kit by Kaisercraft

I started  with this wooden kit by Kaisercraft.  I have worked with many of their "Beyond the Page" projects over the years and they are incredible.  This is a good size project too.  Just to give you an idea, the diameter of the circle is 9.5". 

The next step was to decide how I was going to apply colour.  As you know, I am in love with Distress Oxide Inks.  I love everything about them from the vibrant colours, their coverage, the way their react with water, etc, etc. I sponged colour directly onto the wood and also used stencils for texture and design.  One thing I did notice is that the ink seemed to be absorbed by the wood.  That was fine.  They still look cool but most of the small details from the stencils were lost.  I didn't want that to happen to the main circle portion of the project so I applied gesso.  This helped to seal the wood and allow the ink to sit on top.  I used my most favourite detailing stamp of all time (Script stamp by Magenta Style) and stamped directly onto the gesso using picked raspberry.  I then dusted a little more picked raspberry to add a little more colour. YES!  It was all happening.....

I then tied these fun little mini circle banners to the hoop and let them dangle between the feathers.  I loved how they filled the space a little more.  Just what I needed!  As a side, I have used these on everything from scrapbook layouts to cards to tying gift bag handles.  A great staple product to have lying around.

Then the real fun came in.  Adding all the goodies.  I knew the new Carousel line by Crate Paper would pair beautifully with the teals and fuchsia.  I used these papers to make paper flowers using various Spellbinder and MFT dies. I LOVE rolling these pretty papers to make flowers.

I also added some pre-made Prima flowers.  They were THE perfect size and colour.  It is always nice to have basics like this around.

Did you see how I used this paper?  I made a couple paper flowers at first but knew I had to cut one of these guys out and tuck him in somewhere.  LOVE!  I could see this teal zebra galloping in my dreams.

Remember this product?  It has been a staple at The Pickle like forever.  It's funny how I have forgotten about it.  See how I used this?  I trimmed a few small lengths and hot glued them in among the flowers.  It is appropriate too.  Don't you wish you could capture some of your dreams on this film?  You may start seeing this in EVERYTHING I create from this point on.

You will also see some chipboard from Prima's Rose Quartz line, fabric trim, little gold hearts from Crate Paper and my signature twine!  It's all in the details isn't it?  So how did I know when to stop?  I didn't.  I just kept going until it felt right.  Oh....that and the fact that it was midnight and it was time to haul my butt to bed.  Ha.

Sigh.  This was awesome.  It made me feel SO good.  I'm still debating whether I give this beauty away (Jules tells me it would look great in her room) or keep it for me (it looks great in my craft room!).  Actually, the plan is to share this at the store for a while.  Have a look and tell me what you think.  I hope you enjoyed my post today.  Sharing this with you is all part of the fun for me.  You get that feel good therapy while creating and then again when sharing with those who appreciate your efforts.  ♥

Falling for Inka Gold

Fall is my favourite time of the year. I decorate my house more at this time of the year than any other time (yes, even more than christmas!). I find the colours so warm and cheery. The pumpkins and funky gourds catch my eye every time. 

Nature is beautiful in it's original form but why not take it up a notch?

Can you tell which gourds have been touched by the incredible Inka Gold?  Inka Gold is a beeswax based product that can be applied to many surfaces including gourds!  The key?  Apply with an old rag, sock or your fingers and buff! Buffing brings out the gorgeous shine! 

These gourds are in store now.  I can see them at my Thanksgiving table with a little placecard attached. Let everyone think you're Martha Stewart. Ha. Or just a girl who loves to add a little crafty joy to her life!

The Perfect day to be....

CRAFTING of course!  I mean what else could you do?  Now don't tell me you're going to spend the day tackling a closet or junk drawer organization.  Spend some time for YOU.  Yes, you!  Being creative and working with your hands calms the soul and allows you to recharge for the week ahead.

My plan (once I am done at the store today...open 10-3 just in case  you were wondering♥), is to work away on my SMASH Books (yes, plural).  I have a pretty box full of pretty clippings from my Real Simple magazine, concert stubs, stickers and more that are calling my name.  As much as I love gardening, I am thrilled to have this weekend for a little play time.  I think know I deserve it and you do too!

FREE Make & Takes EVERY Saturday in August

We decided to have a little fun this month.  Join us every Saturday in August for a FREE make and take.  All levels are welcome.

This Saturday you will be lead by Julia, a young, up and coming artist in the paper crafting world.  She wanted to teach a little card (not a tag.....in her words,"Mom, why do you ALWAYS make tags?!?).  Julia chose an adorable Magenta stamp and we will have a ball colouring.  Join us.  It will be fun.

Make a Statement - Unique Teacher Gifts!

Well it's almost that time of the year again.  I swear I bling and another week is done.

Life CAN be Easy...trust me.

Sometimes when I create, I feel GUILTY.  Last night, as mentioned, I pulled out my Valentine's Day stamps but decided to go a completely different route in designing my greeting cards.

Over the past couple of weeks I have been chatting with people (at the coffee shop, car repair place, with Trevor...basically anyone who would listen) about how life is now overly complicated and that I hate it.   I have been craving simplicity.  I will admit that I am almost at that BIG birthday mark but  I don't think this wave length has been prompted by that.  And its funny because the complications that have been bothering me are the little ones.  For example, so you know when you go to the grocery store and you are looking for orange juice and you come across this HUGE freezer section.  There are cans with added vitamin C, no pulp, EXTRA pulp, with other fruits added, etc.  Like really?  And that's not even all.....I forgot all about the section in the fridge area with the cartoned OJ!  People.  I do not need these added choices in my life.  I want to go to the freezer section, grab the proper fruit juice and celebrate the fact that I REMEMBERED!  So many other areas of our day to day world are like this and the cumulative effect can be very draining.  Now don't get me started on the added complication now on my debt card (like why does it now say VISA!?!?!?)....

So yes.....fewer decisions.....more time to get things done and feel good about yourself.

This is where I finish my Friday night design story I started above.  I had pulled all my Valentine's stamps up into the kitchen so I could hang out with the family while designing and doing what I wanted.  My small craft room is in the basement and I hate being removed from them (at times!).  Then I brought over a piece of Crate Paper, a sheet of fun burlap and that's where the decision came in......complicated stamp choices to my left with added hauling of products up the stairs or simplified designing to my right with limited product options.  I chose the path less travelled by me.  I took a sharp RIGHT.  I chose less technique.  I chose using familiar design embellishments.  I chose PURE, simplified FUN.  Just what I needed on a Friday night.

The guilt factor came in when I realized I designed 6 cards effortlessly.  And why should I feel guilty about this?  When you work with quality products like the incredible art work by Crate Paper and Maggie Holmes and interesting textured burlap by Jen Hadfield, your incredible designs can be a snap because THEY did the work for you!  Here are the main products I began my creative process with:

So the moral of the story?  Don't feel guilty EVER when you are designing.  You are spending time doing something you LOVE and whatever happens in the moment happens for a reason.  You know that little blob of ink that decided to jump on your nearly complete card?  Well guess what?  Time to view that as an opportunity to think outside the box while figuring out ways to "hide" it.  You want to pull out all one million shades of Distress Ink to create with?  Go for it!  If that is what you are feeling....you go girl.  This hobby is about adding joy in YOUR life.  Stop looking at what everyone else is creating  and start doing.  It's doesn't take much to get that creative release.  Trust me.

Wrap Your Holidays in Love

Life is all about the details.  This is a phrase that I use quite often.  It can mean many different things including slowing down to stop and smell the roses or doing small things to bring joy to your every day.  If we could only slow down and stop rushing through our to-do list, we would realize that these small details and gestures speak volumes.

Have a look at the little box above.  A small 3x3 cube box tied with seam binding ribbon and a small winter sprig of pine cones.  With one glance, you can see that this gift was wrapped with love.  Time was taken to think about the recipient and the box wrapped to make the person smile and feel loved.  THIS is what gift giving is about.  It is not just about the item purchased but the time and care that went into decisions and wrapping.

Don't forget that many of the beautiful supplies you have in your craft room can be used to dress your presents.  Bands of decorative scrapbooking papers, washi tape, ribbons and more can be used to add life to simple boxes like the ones below.  Why not use some of your chipboard pieces or stickers?  And don't worry if the items are coming from collections that not necessarily holiday.  Stars, woodland animals and vintage images make amazing accents on any present.

You make me SMILE. Open House LOVE

Well.....44 Fourth Street was certainly THE place to be last Saturday!  Thank you to those who came out to our Christmas Open House!  Everyone was in the Christmas spirit shopping and sampling and doing little make and takes.  You took time out of your busy weekend to visit and that meant the world to me.  I'm STILL smiling over here. ♥

Have a look at our make and take above.  We created a 3x3 tag perfect for your gifts this year.  For those of you interested, I cut white card stock 3x3 and the patterned paper 2.75x2.75".  We then stamped the snowman or elf girl in dark green ink and then used either water colour pencils or copic markers to add a little colour.  We then cut out the image and popped it up with a pop dot and added a little glitter and an adorable sentiment.  Ta da!  Easy.  Peasey.  Perfect for this time of the year!

So, just in case you were wondering, the apple cider received rave reviews.  Ha!  Here is the recipe in case any of you are wanting to try this at home.

Slow Cooker Apple Cider (from Country Living - Nov 2015)

Combine the following in a slow cooker:

• 64 oz. apple cider (I used PC fresh pressed apple cider....do not buy the mulled!).
• 6 chai tea bags
• 2 cinnamon sticks
• 1 split vanilla bean

Let simmer for 3-4 hours.

Discard tea bags.

Stir in 1/4 cup lemon juice

Serve warm with apple slices and cinnamon sticks

Christmas Cards for Evelynn

A couple of friends had shared this image on facebook and I really wanted to pass this along on the blog.  (Note:  You may have to click on the image to see the write up clearly.) This really spoke to me.  I mean is this not what the holidays are all about?  I do not know Evelynn or her family and I can only image what they are going through.  But what a beautiful gesture this could be for you (and for me)!  Making cards is one of my favourite pass times and making a card for a little girl who has had such a trying time seems like the perfect way to spend an evening.  I hope you can find some time this holiday season to make this little girl (and her family) smile.

ZONTA Love

My 2015 Zonta Christmas Card

Remember that fabulous event I told you about a little while ago?  The Zonta Christmas Card Making Extravaganza?  Well Event #1 happened last Saturday, November 7th and guess what?  It was fabulous (no surprise there!).  Many of the usual suspects were there and it was so nice chatting and catching up with the ladies.  Thank you for a wonderful day.

When it comes to creating my card for this event, I put a lot of pressure on myself.  I want to make sure there is enough technique and people will be wowed by my design.  The designs are always my own so a lot of "playing" happens before I get to my finished product.  The challenging part is making sure the card takes no more than 30 minutes as this event rotates people from station to station with 8 projects in total.

I was very happy with the way the card turned out.  I heard many positive comments and the one that stood out for me was "It is VERY Paper Pickle".  Now I will take that as a compliment!  In true Paper Pickle fashion, I created a card that was both elegant AND rustic.  I don't know what it is about this combination, but I feel it is a MUST at Christmastime!

Deer Trio - $15.50

The design really began with these two Impression Obsession dies.  I knew I wanted to work with these and then I set out incorporating them into my card.  I must tell you that both dies are IDEAL for an A2 size card (4.25x5.5") and I adore both.  I have also tried the Deer Trio die on a place card and it too is fabulous.  

How To

I cut my shimmer brown card stock to 10" in length (4.25" wide) and scored at to 5.5" (top crease).  That left 4.5" on the front of the card.  This allowed an extra 1" for the cream shimmer word edgers to "hang".  I loved how the cream shimmer popped of the dark background.  

I then worked with various stencils, stamps and ink to create a design on my canvas textured card stock.  This technique is one of my favourites.  I used it a couple of spring sessions ago and HAD to bring it back for the Christmas crowd just in case they hadn't seen it before.

The design was tied together with my signature move....twine and my new favourite embellishment....cheese cloth! Oh and a little star and rhinestone in the top corner completed the creation.  What do you think?  I've got this card at the store if you want to have a look for yourself.

Trick or Treat Craftin'

Halloween Treats for the School

I had a wonderful Sunday afternoon wreath making at a friends house.  I wanted to keep the fun going so I prepped the paper and the treats and the kids and I sat down at the kitchen table to craft.

I can tell you that Julia will sit with me for hours pasting and drawing etc.  She worked diligently on her 27 treats for the class and I was proud watching her glue her tags and write (in cursive I might add) her Happy Halloween message.

Coulter on the other hand, does not sit still for quite as long but he is always eager to listen and please his mom.  He wrote his name on all 16 halloween tags along with his sister.  What a good boy!

The treats were very simple.  Two mini freezies wrapped with an adorable paper from Crate Paper (including many Halloween words).  The tags were then fastened to the treats with bakers twine.  Not too much but just enough for the kids I believe.  To me the exercise was about teaching my children the importance of thinking of others and taking the time to show we care about them.  It is not about ME rushing around for them to get the job done.  As I get older, I think (and hope!) I am figuring out what this life is ALL about.  Score one for the good guys.  Remember....no tricks only treats!

Traditions...

Add a touch of class to your Thanksgiving Meal

What is a tradition?  It is a longstanding belief or custom that is passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth or by practice.

We have been talking a lot about traditions at our house lately.  Trevor was stressing the importance of tradition and I couldn't agree more.  But then he said that WE as a family do not have many traditions.  I thought that was bologna!  There are so many little things that we do that are traditions in our house including having a nice big breakfast as a family each Sunday or Trevor and the kids visiting with his mom each Saturday while I hang with you at the store.   I told him that in the moment, you may not realize that you are in fact creating traditions of your own.  And it is only when you look back that some of these little things you do or places you go have become a tradition.  I don't know.  Now that I read this, I wonder if my stance was a little weak.  What do you think?  (Shhh....don't tell Trev that.)

There is no debating that traditions are important.  My mom has a tradition at Christmas time where she puts out the same place cards with our names on it.  I love seeing my name in the familiar cursive font.  It is a simple little gesture but I feel like it adds a touch of class to our meal.  And I wanted to extend this idea to you and your table!

Designing stationery for weddings is a big part of my business.  This stationery includes not only invitations but other paper goods including place cards.  I decided to create a couple of crafty, Thanksgiving inspired place cards just in time for your big family gathering.

Now I know many of you are VERY crafty and your creations literally leave me speechless.  But I do know designing on the computer can be a challenge too.  So here's the way I can help you start a new little tradition:

• Let me know which design and what names you need printed by October 5th (please stop in or email your names to thepaperpickle@gmail.com)
• The price is $1.00 each if you use your crafting skills to assemble yourself.  It will just be a matter of gluing on the leaves or pumpkins and adding whatever other details you can think of!
• The price is $2.00 each if you would like us to assemble. 
• Tags can be picked up October 7th if YOU are assembling yourself, or October 9th if WE are assembling....perfect.  Just in time for Thanksgiving!

These cards can be used year after year and your family will grow to love this tradition as much as I have.  Another thought is that you could use the inside of the place card to write what you are thankful for or a little comment about the dinner.  Your family members could date it and you read the simple little notes/thoughts the next year.  I know the cards are not overly huge (measure 4" wide by 3.5" when folded flat) but there is still room for a little "Best turkey ever!" or "Sweetie Pie ♥".

Good Ol' Fashion Southern Picnic

Super fun paper straws, mason jars, Black-eyed Susans, chalkboards
and lemonade add to the theme of the party!

I mentioned last week that I was busy planning a party at our house.  Every year, we host a fantasy football party.  The league has been running since 2002 and the boys pick their players who will essentially be on their "fantasy team".  To be honest, I really do not care at all about the football part of the day.  I am not a football fan and I never will be.  What I do like about football season, however, is that it gives me license to do whatever I want every Sunday throughout the fall....and that usually means crafting!

So you are probably wondering why I get all worked up every year about this football party when I don't even care for the sport.  What I do live for is planning a FUN party that will be memorable for all our guest.  Each year I have a little more fun planning and decorating.  We have been choosing "themes" for this football party for a while now with the theme usually revolving around the food served.  This year's theme was "Ol' Fashion Southern Picnic".

Food items included:

• Sweet-Tea Brined & Grilled Chicken 
• This was incredible btw! 
•  Click for recipe (Cuisine at Home is my GO-TO for amazing recipes!)
• I even made some without the rub and it was perfect for the kids.
• Sweet corn & Watermelon
• Deviled Eggs & fresh sliced breads
• Peach Pie & Red Velvet Cupcakes
• And of course - Lemonade!!

It is easy to wow your guests with a few simple decor items including paper lanterns.  I chose red and white to match with my theme and my table linens.  You will also notice I decorated with the fun hot air balloons which were also perfect for this theme.  Notice how cool they look hung from our huge maple tree!  I usually hang these with fishing line but since I couldn't find mine, I used baker's twine and that looked really cool.

Simple items like wooden crates (found at Degoey's in Chatham) can serve as wonderful decor items with a purpose.....perfect for catching empties!  I was also very happy with this chalkboard arrow sign that told guests what time the band came on.

I wanted to do something special for the kiddies.  Jules (my daughter) and I whipped up some paper treat bags tied with baker's twine.  Contents included ol' fashion lollipops, gum balls, jubjubs and fun pinwheels.  I found these pinwheels at the Superstore a year ago on clearance for $0.14 each!  They were the perfect addition to the bag and made for a very fun visual.  They were even spinning away throughout the day....how fun!  These could very easily be made out of scrapbooking papers if you like.

The weather was perfect and a good time was had by all.  I really wish I had more photos of all the little details but this is all I took between prepping food for the 50+ people and when I cut loose once the meal was done.  And did I EVER cut loose.  Yikes!  Remind me next year to cool it a little, will ya?  I'm not as young as I use to be.  Ha.

The Moral of the Story

Yes, there is a reason why I shared my little party with you.  It is to show you that you can easily transition your love of paper and pretty things to party settings.  Maybe you have been doing a little less in terms of scrap booking or card making and that's ok.  But there are always gatherings.  There are always small ways to make your guests feel loved.  Little things like making washi tape flags for your desserts, stringing fun paper bunting or paper lanterns above a cake table or creating a fun memory guest book! I know you can use your amazing eye for colour and details to add that WOW effect to your next event.

Paper Decorating LOVE

This is the time of the year when everyone yearns to be outside.  Every party seems to be set outdoors, making the most of the beautiful weather and lush surroundings.  Why not have a little fun when you host your next outdoor soiree and bring your love of paper outside?  

 Check out these great paper hot air balloons we have in stock!  They come as a three pack for $20.95.  You can see you get three coordinating patterns with white and gold designs.  If you have been in the store, you will see these beauties floating by.

 Strands of mini paper garland can be a subtle addition to a party.  Dangle them from paper lanterns, string them up on their own or even add them to a guest sign in scrap book page.  There is 107" of fun so go nuts!  I love the fact that they are white because you can keep them nice and clean or alter using stamps, ink, stencils and more.  There are so many pretty ways to create the perfect accent for any party! ($4.50)

Now this party garland is much bigger with the 3D circles being 6" in diameter.  They make a big statement at a rustic themed party.  These too can be altered using crafting products.  The garland measures 6 feet in length ($8.99).

 This garland is not 3D like the kraft style above but I love the two alternating sizes of circles (4-6") and the matte card stock used is perfect for stamping and altering.  I HAD to bring this baby home with me.  I am just itching to have a little fun playing!
